SPECIALTY
AND
DAIRY
Toray manufactures membrane elements in sanitary designs and for heat-sanitizable applications at Toray Membrane USA (TMUS) in San Diego, California. We specialize in reverse osmosis (RO), nanofiltration (NF), ultrafiltration (UF), and microfiltration (MF) for various separation needs in dairy, food & beverage, pharmaceutical, and industrial processes. Toray has a team of product specialists ready to develop custom engineered solutions for your specific need.
Hygienic Purified Water
Toray's UF, RO, and Heat Sanitizable RO membrane elements provide superior permeate quality for hygienic purified water applications. RO elements use a cross-linked fully aromatic polyamide composite membrane. Net-wrapped elements conform to FDA Regulation CFR Title 21 and USDA/3A Sanitary Standards. Heat-sanitizable elements confirm to FDA Regulation CFR Title 21.

Reverse Osmosis for Dairy and Food Processing
Toray's sanitary RO membrane elements (TRO-series and TMRO-series) incorporate a fully cross-linked aromatic polyamide composite membrane in a sanitary net wrapped design for high rejection. TRO-series are ideal for maximum retention of valuable milk solids and COD/BOD contributing compounds. Membranes using Toray's next-generation 'D-family' polyamide composite membranes offer added durability against foulants and chemical cleanings. The components used in TRO-series conform to FDA Regulation CFR Title 21 and USDA/3-A Sanitary Standards. TMRO-series conform to FDA Regulation CFR Title 21.
Nanofiltration for Dairy and Food Processing
Toray's sanitary NF membrane elements(TNF-series and TMNF-series) desalt milk and whey products (removal of monovalent ions) and maximize the retention of lactose and larger organic molecules. The components used in TNF-series conform to FDA Regulation CFR Title 21 and USDA/3-A Sanitary Standards. TMNF-series conform to FDA Regulation CFR Title 21.
Ultrafiltration for Dairy and Food Processing
Toray offers 5,000 and 10,000 molecular cutoff weight membranes to meet the needs of your proprietary process for dairy applications, beverage, or RO pretreatment needs.

Membrane | Character | Application |
---|---|---|
TUF 10K | Our standard UF that outperforms industry benchmarks on both flux and protein retention | Whey processing at all concentrations, MPC |
TUF 5K | A very high retention membrane | A direct replacement for competitor 5K membranes |
TUF 5K HR | A low flux membrane with maximum retention | Special applications in dairy, gelatin, sugar etc. |
The Sanitary UF membrane is a hydrophilic polyethersulfone asymmetric membrane, developed for maximum retention of milk and whey proteins and maximum productivity. The components used in TUF-series conform to FDA Regulation CFR Title 21 and USDA/3-A Sanitary Standards.

Microfiltration for Dairy and Food Processing
Toray's sanitary MF membrane elements(TMF-series) are used for whey or WPC defatting and have high whey protein transmission rates. This membrane incorporates PVDF chemistry and has a molecular weight cutoff (MWCO) of between 500,000 and 1,000,000 Daltons.
